On 11 December 2024, Colchester Crematorium hosted a beautiful and uplifting Carol Service, bringing together local residents, council members, the mayor, and special guests for a warm and festive evening. The two-hour service was filled with moments of joy, reflection, and community spirit, setting the perfect tone for the holiday season.

The evening began with a warm welcome and opening speech by Russell Gadsby, Manager of Colchester Crematorium, followed by thoughtful readings that captured the spirit of Christmas. The Birth of Jesus (Luke 2: v 8-20) and The Gift of Love (Corinthians 1:13) were shared, leading into A Message of Remembrance and Hope delivered by Civil Funeral Celebrant Jenny Humphreys.

One of the most poignant moments of the evening was the Lighting of the Candles ceremony, led by Susi Long and Wendy De Rosa. This symbolic act brought comfort and peace to attendees, reminding everyone of the light that love and memory bring into our lives.

The service continued with a reading of A Christmas Carol by Councillor Alison Jay, followed by a heartfelt Period of Reflection, during which participants hung memory tags and lit candles to honor loved ones. This touching moment was accompanied by beautiful music from organist Stephen Evans and soloist Graham Long, whose performances added depth and warmth to the occasion.

Saul Hunnaball of Hunnaball Family Funeral Group shared a moving poem, resonating with themes of love and remembrance, which united the attendees.

The festive mood reached its peak with a joyous rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas, led by Graham Long, as everyone joined in with smiles and laughter.

The service concluded with closing words from Assistant Manager Lee Copping, leaving attendees with a sense of hope and gratitude.

Colchester Crematorium’s Carol Service was a beautiful celebration of community, remembrance, and the true spirit of Christmas, leaving all who attended with warm hearts and cherished memories. Additionally, the service raised £120 for the local charity Colchester Blanketeers. A cheque presentation ceremony was held on 17 December, where Cllr Natalie Sommers presented the cheque to Susi Long, a representative of Colchester Blanketeers.
