There has been significant press coverage in recent months regarding both Elkin & Bell Funeral Directors in Hampshire and more so in respect of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull. Two of the most distressing cases to confront the funeral profession in many many years. Government have provided a commitment to support the introduction of regulation within the funeral sector.

It is important to note that whilst funeral directors are not regulated, the burial and cremation sector is already regulated. Burial and cremation authorities operate within comprehensive statutory frameworks that govern the lawful management of facilities and processes involving the deceased.

Colchester City Council Bereavement Services are members of both the FBCA (Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities) and the ICCM (Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management).

We were audited by the FBCA in May 2025, achieving a Compliance Score of 95.7%

We hold a bi-annual Open Day providing complete visibility and open discussion regarding every element of the cremation process.

Bereaved families deserve complete honesty, absolute transparency and the highest standards of professional care. We will provide whatever support we can that leads to the introduction of funeral director regulation.
